Waking up next to Udawalawe was pretty special.
We did the two-night camping trip at Udawalawe and loved it. It wasn't luxury camping, and that wasn't what we wanted anyway. The best part was being so close to the national park and waking up already surrounded by the sounds of the bush. The safaris were excellent. Obviously the elephants were the stars, but we also saw plenty of birds, raptors and other wildlife. Our guide never seemed in a hurry, which we really appreciated. We also visited the Elephant Transit Home. We had heard about it before the trip, but learning how the young elephants are rehabilitated for release made the visit much more interesting. Three days was just right and felt completely different from staying in another hotel.
